PC-based Control – one control platform for all communication standards

At IFAT Entsorga between 7 and 11 May in Munich, Germany, Beckhoff will present its PC-based Control technology for the water and wastewater industry. The open automation solution supports all common communication standards for interfacing with the process and field levels. Embedded PCs will be one of the highlights at the Beckhoff Booth. The compact, DIN rail-mountable devices provide a high-performance, Windows-based control system with direct interface for the I/O level.

Planners and engineers are facing special challenges when it comes to water management: on the one hand, municipalities are demanding modern and highly efficient systems to facilitate efficient and cost-effective water treatment and processing. On the other hand, the available budgets are often very limited. The open, PC-based control system offers the right solution in terms of performance and costs. It supports all common communication standards and enables logging and processing of a large number of process data.  

Open communication right down to the process level and external stations  

PC-based Control technology benefits from continuously increasing processor power and offers compact, high-performance hardware platforms for water sourcing and water and wastewater treatment. Open interfaces facilitate communication with the process level and external stations via standardised software interfaces or radio and fieldbus connections. The TwinCAT automation software supports the telecontrol protocols according to IEC 60870-5-10-x and OPC UA for standardised, safe data exchange and all common fieldbus systems. External stations are also connected via communication standards such as ISDN, analog modem, radio, GPRS, UMTS, or via fieldbuses such as Ethernet, PROFIBUS or PROFINET.  

Space-saving PC controllers with integrated measurement technology  

With its extensive range of Industrial PCs Beckhoff offers scalable performance as required by the respective application, ranging from high-performance Industrial PCs with multi-core processors to compact embedded controllers. The embedded devices from Beckhoff make PC technology available in a compact miniature format. Direct interfacing of the Bus Terminals enables seamless integration of all common sensors and actuators for precise logging of process parameters such as temperature, vibration, pressure or volume flow in the control system.  

Flexible engineering with TwinCAT – from simple to complex

The open Beckhoff automation toolkit includes a wide range of software modules for fast and straightforward engineering. All Beckhoff controllers are programmed with the TwinCAT automation software in the common IEC 61131-3 programming languages. Alternatively, TwinCAT also offers more complex functions such as Condition Monitoring for early detection of system faults or interfacing with Matlab®/Simulink® for system simulations.
