Beckhoff at Husum WindEnergy 2012
Reduced hardware costs, higher availability – and all on a single platform: the integrated Beckhoff approach.

Welcome to the Husum WindEnergy 2012: this year Beckhoff, as a specialist for
PC-based automation solutions, has fresh approaches to “new energies” in store for you with which you can directly benefit from the profound engineering know-how of our international wind expertise team. Take advantage of our extensive experience in
PC-based Control: over 20,000 wind turbines with outputs of up to 5 MW run worldwide with Beckhoff – both on and offshore. Over 7,000 were added in 2011 alone, with a total output of 11.2 GW. Highlight topic of the Husum WindEnergy 2012: ultra-fast wind farm networking.
We will show you how you can achieve this with an open automation solution and we are looking forward to your visit!
PC-based Control: everything on a single platform
A powerful controller is available in PC-based automation technology that unites all compo-
nents of a wind turbine – such as operational management and control of pitch, generator, converter and brake, as well as Condition Monitoring and farm networking – on a single platform. Doing without special hardware lowers the costs of the basic electrical equipment of the wind turbine and the costs of maintenance, whilst at the same time increasing the availability of the wind turbine. The open, scalable automation software TwinCAT forms the core of the PC-based control platform. Open interfaces allow the integration of third-party software, for example for SCADA, Condition Monitoring, obstruction lighting or foundation monitoring.
Ultra-fast wind farm networking with reaction times of less than 1 ms
In comparison with conventional IP solutions, wind farm networking with EtherCAT is faster and in addition offers cost benefits. The faster the farm networking is, the more effective the energy provider can react to voltage drops or changing requirements. Using the EL3773 EtherCAT Power Measurement Terminal, momentary current and voltage values can be measured at up to 10,000 samples/s at the infeed point. Early diagnosis of voltage drops is thus guaranteed. Unlike the current solution, it is possible to generate a reaction of an entire wind farm to an LVRT case. A voltage drop at the infeed point can be signalled to all wind turbines in the entire farm network within 1 ms. EtherCAT
Integrated Condition Monitoring solution
PC-based control integrates the CMS function seamlessly into the existing automation system. This can be used to monitor all the turbine states, including gearbox, main bearing and generator. Apart from considerable cost benefits and flexible expandability, this solution also scores with improved diagnostics. The CMS function is integrated into the terminal strand via a Beckhoff EtherCAT terminal, e.g. the EL3632. The acquired raw data are made available by TwinCAT within the controller. The CMS analysis software, which diagnoses the acquired data and initiates a corresponding downstream service, is coupled by the user via a standard interface such as OPC.

TwinCAT 3 – universal control platform reduces engineering
TwinCAT offers the user a high degree of freedom in choosing his programming language: in addition to the object orientated extensions of IEC 61131-3, C and C++ are now also available as programming languages for real-time applications. With the integration of Matlab®/Simulink®, TwinCAT can also be used for plant simulation, for example for load calculation. TwinCAT 3
